Coverage

Carmaxx is replacement cost insurance. It sits alongside the policy you already have, and only comes into play if your vehicle is written off.

Here’s what happens when it does, what each plan covers, and what the terminology actually means.

How it works

If your vehicle is written off, here’s what happens

Traditional insurance settles at current market value, which is often less than the cost of replacing your vehicle with a comparable one. That shortfall is the problem Carmaxx exists to solve.

1

Your insurer pays market value

Your primary insurer settles the claim based on what your vehicle is worth on the day of the loss, not what you paid for it.

2

A financial gap appears

Vehicles depreciate while replacement prices rise. The settlement can fall thousands short of a comparable replacement, and that shortfall lands on you.

3

Carmaxx covers the difference

We pay the eligible difference on top of your insurer’s settlement, so you can move forward without an unexpected shortfall.

Carmaxx does not replace your existing auto policy. You keep your primary insurer, and Carmaxx pays on top of their settlement after a covered total loss.

What we offer

Two plans, for new and used vehicles

Which plan applies depends on the vehicle you bought. Both work the same way at claim time: your insurer settles first, then we cover the eligible difference. The figures below are illustrative.

New Vehicle Replacement

If your new vehicle is written off, we help cover the difference between what your insurer pays out and the cost of a comparable new replacement.

Example · You paid $40,000
Illustrative
Your primary insurer’s payout (depreciated value)$31,000
A comparable new one now costs$42,000
What Carmaxx could cover
$11,000
Included in the plan
OEM parts on repairs, $2,500 per 12 months$7,500 max
Deductible reimbursement, on repairs or a write-off$500 / loss
Rental after a write-off, up to $2,500 per year$50 / day
Key fob replacement, once per policy$500

OEM parts coverage applies while the vehicle is model year 5 or newer, for up to 36 months. Deductible reimbursement on repairs is limited to three claims per policy term. Limits and conditions are set by the policy wording.

Used / Limited Depreciation

If your used vehicle is written off, we help cover the difference between what your insurer pays out and your plan’s agreed replacement value.

Example · You paid $20,000
Illustrative
Your primary insurer’s payout (depreciated value)$14,000
Your plan’s agreed replacement value$20,000
What Carmaxx could cover
$6,000
Included in the plan
Deductible reimbursement, on repairs or a write-off$500 / loss
Rental after a write-off, up to $2,500 per year$50 / day
Key fob replacement, once per policy$500

OEM parts coverage is not available on this plan. Deductible reimbursement on repairs is limited to three claims per policy term. Limits and conditions are set by the policy wording.

Insurance terms, in plain language

Coverage documents are full of jargon. Here is what the terms we use actually mean. Still unsure? Call 1-888-248-5014 and we’ll walk you through it.

These are plain-language summaries, not the policy. Every term below is formally defined in the BC Vehicle Replacement Cost Insurance Policy wording, and that wording governs what is and isn’t covered.

What is a total loss (a “write-off”)?

Under the policy, a total loss is direct physical loss or damage where the cost of repair exceeds your vehicle’s actual cash value at the time of loss, as determined by your primary insurer. Theft also counts as a total loss if the vehicle isn’t recovered within 30 days. Carmaxx does not make that determination and does not set the threshold.

What is actual cash value (ACV)?

ACV is what your vehicle is worth at the time of loss, rather than what you paid for it. The policy defines it as the lesser of your primary insurer’s settlement amount before deductions or penalties, an average-score Black Book valuation, or a value set by an appraiser chosen by the insurer. Standard auto policies settle at ACV, which is why a payout on a three-year-old car rarely buys the same car new.

What is depreciation, and why does it create a gap?

Depreciation is the value your vehicle loses over time, fastest in the first few years. Meanwhile the cost of a comparable replacement tends to rise. Your settlement follows the falling line, your replacement is priced on the rising one, and the space between them is the gap this coverage is built for.

What is replacement cost coverage, and does it replace my insurance?

No, it sits on top. This is optional coverage that pays the difference between what your primary policy pays out and what it costs to get back into a comparable vehicle. You keep your existing insurer, and you must keep comprehensive and collision physical damage coverage in force on the vehicle for the whole term — if the primary policy lapses, or the primary insurer denies the claim, there is nothing for this coverage to top up.

What does “limited depreciation” mean on the used-vehicle plan?

Instead of settling against a value that keeps falling, the used vehicle plan measures your loss against a value fixed around the time you bought. After a covered total loss it pays the difference between your primary insurer’s settlement and the lesser of your purchase price, the amount of coverage shown on your application and declaration, or the Black Book fair market value of the vehicle when you bought it.

What are OEM parts, and when does that coverage apply?

OEM means original equipment manufacturer — parts made by the company that built your vehicle rather than aftermarket equivalents. Insurers often authorise aftermarket parts on a repair, and this coverage pays the difference so OEM parts can be used, provided your primary insurer isn’t already obliged to use them.

It applies to repairs, not write-offs, and only on the New Vehicle Replacement plan. The policy covers a defined list of parts — exterior body panels, glass, suspension, rims, axles, radiators, air conditioning condensers and similar — and excludes powertrain, engine, transmission, electrical, exhaust and interior parts. Check the wording for the current list and limits before relying on it.

What is a deductible, and what is deductible reimbursement?

Your deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before your primary insurer pays anything on a claim. Deductible reimbursement pays that back to you, up to $500, on both repairs and a write-off. On repairs it is capped at three claims over the term of the policy.

Is my vehicle eligible?

Eligibility is set by the policy and confirmed when you apply, but the broad strokes: the vehicle must be less than ten years from its date of manufacture, purchased for no more than $200,000 before tax, insured continuously under a primary policy carrying comprehensive and collision, and used privately rather than commercially. There is also a list of excluded exotic and luxury manufacturers, and vehicles already carrying replacement cost coverage from the primary insurer are not eligible. Ask us for a quote and we’ll confirm your specific vehicle.

What is a Proof of Loss form?

A Proof of Loss is the written submission that formally sets out your claim — what happened, what you’re claiming, and the supporting documentation. It’s the standard starting document for a claim. You can download the Carmaxx Proof of Loss form from our claims page.
